10 websites that hire writers for telecommuting or work-at-home positions.

There are many great sites out there offering writers the opportunity to work from home while doing what they love. Here's a list of 10 sites that hire writers for work-at-home or telecommuting positions.

1) About.com

About.com hires contributing writers and guides. Take a look through the subtopics to see if you find something that interests you.

2) Associated Content

Associated Content enables anyone to publish their content on any topic. It's important to note that they only pay U.S. residents for their work.

3) Elance

At Elance, companies post projects which writers can the bid on. This can sometimes involve a lot of work on behalf of the writer in order to get a successful contract.

4) Freelance Writing Gigs

This site provides an updated list every day of different positions that are open. The daily updates and content organization make this a great place to start.

5) Genuine Jobs

This site isn't just for writers, but it can have some pretty good leads. One major downside is that the ads on this site can get pretty intrusive after a while.

6) GetAFreelancer.com

This website is similar to Elance in the sense that writers can bid on projects. It can take a lot of work at times to land a successful contract.

7) Helium

Helium invites writers to contribute articles on just about any subject. Writers are not paid up-front and instead earn money based how many people view the articles. Writers are not paid out until they reach a minimum of $25.00 USD.

8) Online Writing Jobs

This site is a job list aggregator, which means that it pulls writing jobs from other sites where they are already posted. The list is usually pretty thorough and can cut down on time spent searching on other sites.

9) Suite101

Suite101 allows writers to contribute articles. Writers are not paid up-front and instead earn money based how many people click on the ads in the articles. Writers are not paid out until they reach a minimum of $10.00 USD.

10) Work at Home Mom (WAHM)

This website lists more than just writing jobs, it has a variety of remote/telecommute jobs from Craigslist, but it's a pretty good list.

Please remember to use common sense. Work-at-home scams are common, and you don't want to make yourself a target. You should never have to pay to work for a company. They should be paying you. Try to find legitimate companies with a track-record of paying their employees fairly and on-time.

Great article! I'd also recommend FlexJobs (www.flexjobs.com) which lists only legitimate telecommuting and flexible schedule jobs. All the jobs on the site are pre-screened and there are categories for Writing, Editing, Proofreading, Blogging, Copywriting, Grant Writing, and Online Content jobs. Best of luck to anyone searching for jobs!
